In my humble opinion, the drumming world is dominated by the drum
manufacturers. And being a great drummer has less to do with your
equipment and more to do with your skills.
To support my opinion … a great drummer playing a trash can will sound great.
Also, this is not an anti-capitalist rant. I am a capitalist all the way. It is more
a matter of focus.
My opinion — focus on your skills — first. And the rest should come later.
This is evidenced by how the manufacturers dominant on the Internet … see my
other post on great drum blogs … http://playdrumsinaband.com/where-are-all-the-great-drum-blogs/
Also, look at the Alexa list [What is Alexa? Alexa computes traffic rankings by analyzing the Web usage of millions of Alexa Toolbar users and data obtained from other, diverse traffic data sources.]
http://www.alexa.com/topsites/category/Top/Arts/Music/Instruments/Percussion
This list is dominated my the instrument makers.
Now, you could argue that “instruments” is a sub group of the list … but if you back off
and look at http://www.alexa.com/topsites/category/Top/Arts/Music/ … you get no closer to finding anything about drumming than the instrument category.
I guess this is rant … but also an opportunity … for drumming educators … to organize.
If only we had a “community organizer”…
