Are drum lessons worth the time and money?

This is a common statement from many drummers. I don’t need to take lessons, I know how to play drums.  And this shows an important point … drum lessons are not just for learning the basics of drumming.  Yes, some people start with lessons but the great drummers are always learning and growing and improving their craft. It is important for you to decide what type of drummer you plan to be … 1) just get by with the basics covered OR 2) cover the basics and be able to do more when asked, be continually growing.

My hope is that you will choose to be continually growing.  It doesn’t matter if you’ve been playing for 15 minutes or 15 years … there is always something you can learn to improve your performance.

Is it worth forking over the money for drum lessons?  YES … just do it. You can always learn something new and expand your horizon.

But do it wisely. Pick qualified teachers … who play and have experience. I would suggest you pick a teacher that plays regularly. There is a real difference between a teacher … who knows the theory but not the real world experience. And a teacher who plays, knows the theory and applies it everyday.  Ask to see a teacher play in a real world situation before you sign up for lessons. It also helps if the teacher enjoys the style of music you intend to play.

Hope this helps.
